Responsible India!
As a part of our responsible travel policy we aim to minimise the negative effects and maximise the positive effects of travel. We are lucky in using Intrepid Travel for our land arrangements as they have a well developed responsible travel policy, so in essence, much of this work is done for us.
Intrepid's global policy can be seen here, and how this contributes to the Better Travel Photography policy can be seen .
Although it is important to have a global policy for responsible travel, there are certain local variations and specifics that will vary with each destination and with each tour. The specific information for this tour can be found on this page.
Responsible Travel visits
For every tour we run, we try to visit a local project where people can see how organisations are trying to make the world a better place, and hopefully make a positive contribution, even if it is just by buying something from their gift shop!
In Leh, we visit the gift shop and headquarters of a LEDeG, a conservation organisation working to preserve the environment and Ladakhi traditional ways of life. For more information, see www.ledeg.org
Indian Responsible Travel Projects
Our sponsored project is Deepalaya. Deepalaya started in 1979 to help children who would otherwise work and live on the railway platforms, bus stations and commercial complexes of Delhi. They establish education centres, provide hostel care and counselling, community health initiatives and a range of other projects to care for working children, street children, girls with no education, "differently-abled" children and run away children. For more information, see www.goonj.org
The final sponsored project in India is GOONJ. GOONJ is a unique initiative to provide clothes and other basic needs to millions of people - on the roads, in the remote areas, across the country. Travellers can donate unwanted clothing to this project through the base hotel in Delhi. For more information, see www.deepalaya.org
Responsible Travel Guidelines
Intrepid Travel produces specific responsible travel guidelines for travellers to India. These carry country specific information that will help you not to cause offence, but also to get more out of your visit.
These Responsible Travel Guidelines to India will be included in your trip notes, but can also be downloaded from here.
