Jordan is an incredible country that is at the crucible of history: where the great religions of Islam, Christianity and Judaism have met, and often fought for countless generations. Many of the geographical sites found in the bible actually can be found in the country which also plays host to ruins from ancient civilisations including the Romans and the Nabateans. Yet Jordan is about more than history and this trip takes in some of the stunning desert scenery at Wadi Rum, the Red Sea at Aqaba and even includes a dip in the Dead Sea.
Our first trip to Jordan ran successfully in November 2013 and we have made a number of tweaks and are confident that this trip offers unparalleled opportunities to explore this fascinating country, and to come back with incredible pictures.
This trip is organised through the Intrepid Travel in the United Kingdom, which means that you have a range of payment options and if you but your flights through them, you trip can be fully ATOL protected. The trip will include extensive photography tuition from professional travel photographer, Steve Davey, countless photo opportunities and the company of fellow photography enthusiasts.
Our adventure starts off with a flight into the Jordanian capital of Amman. The timing of the trip is scheduled to coincide with the Easyjet flight from London, although you are free to use any airline, or fly out earlier to spend more time in Jordan. Intrepid Travel, are able to purchase these flights for you, which would mean that your entire trip can be covered by their ATOL protection. Otherwise Intrepid are members of other travel bonding schemes, so that you trip will be comprehensively protected. See this link for more details.
After a day exploring the hilly and historic city of Amman, we head out on an early morning drive into the desert, heading to Wadi Rum. After switching to 4WD jeeps we arrive at our campsite where we can explore the incredible rock formations eroded by the years. Here you can experiment with photographing star trails, and taking pictures by moonlight.
Following an atmospheric night in a desert camp we head to the rose city of Petra - the highlight of any trip to Jordan. We have opted to spend extra time here, to allow us to fully explore the site, and also to cover a number of photographic themes in our regular talks. You will have plenty of time to explore the site, plan your shots and take advantage of early morning and late afternoon light.
Our next stop is the Dana National Park, where we will have plenty of opportunities for landscape photography, as well as an option trek through mountain scenery to a lush oasis of date palms. There is a chance of a seeing some of the wildlife that can be found in the park, including Ibex, and even the colourful Agama Lizard
We travel on to Madaba, calling in at the Crusader Castle at Kerak and the famous Dead Sea, where you will have the chance for a good float and to cover yourself in Dead Sea mud. This is supposed to make you feel ten years younger!
We stay for two nights at the historic city of Madaba, with a visit to the atmospheric ruins of the city of Jerash to the north. We also have the chance to explore Madaba before an optional transfer to Amman for our flight home.
Is Jordan safe? A local Bedouin once described Jordan as a quiet house in a noisy neighbourhood. Certainly it is one of the most peaceful of all of the countries in the region and the royal family has managed to handle both the Arab Spring, and the problems in neighbouring countries with aplomb. Although there are issues with refugees coming over from the fighting in Syria, these are largely localised along the Northern border. The majority of our trip is in other parts of the country.
Jordanians are remarkably friendly and welcoming people and we are sure that you will come home with many incredible memories and some stunning photographs!
