Montserrat

In this section of the Better Travel Photography website, we show images of some of the shoots that Steve Davey has carried out recently. This includes personal projects, commissions and also images from some of his travel photography tours.

This is not just a chance to see some of the most spectacular places and events in the world, but to see some of Steve's theories of travel photography such as composition and shooting a photo-story in action. Over the next few months we will add many more galleries to this section including images from Steve's travel photography trips as well as forthcoming and recent commissions that Steve has carried out for a range of publications.

The essence of travel photography is a celebration of the world: it's places, people, wildlife and culture. This is what has driven Steve to travel so much over the years, and he turned to travel photography as a way to bring the magic and sense of wonder that he feels about the world to other people. Travel photography doesn't have to be a chore though: what greater motivation can there be to get out and see and experience the world.

The high altitude region of Ladakh, India

Nestling between the Karakoram and Greater Himalayan mountains, the high altitude region of Ladakh is like nowehere else in India. Ladakh will quite literally take your breath away. The altitude of the main city, Leh, is 3505m (10500 ft). Ladakh is more Tibetan than Indian. It is an entrancing mixture of Tibetan monasteries, palaces and a thriving culture, set in some of the most rugged and spectacular scenery in the world.

The Volcanic Island of Montserrat in the Caribbean

You may think that you have never heard of Montserrat: the amazingly traditional island in the Caribbean, but the chances are that you have! Most recently, Montserrat was propelled into the spotlight when the active volcano that forms the largest part of the island erupted, creating a pyroclastic flow that buried the old capital city of Plymouth. This city can still be seen, buried like a modern-day Pompei. To see more images from this gallery click on the image here.

Cruising for Polar Bears in Arctic Svalbard

The Svalbard Archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, to the North of Norway is a unique ecosystem that is home to one of the largest Polar Bear populations in the world. The best way to see them is on an expedition ice-breaker which can take you to remote regions of pack ice where these fearsome predators roam. This harsh environment is one of the truly unspoilt parts of the world, with countless mountains, glaciers and fjords that hardly see any human visitors at all. This gallery charts a ten-day expedition looking for polar bears.

The Island of Socotra off the coast of Yemen

Socotra is an ecological haven in the Arabian Sea. In splendid isolation it has developed its own flora, fauna and a thriving local culture. Known to the Romans, Ancient Greeks and Marco Polo, Socotra is emerging from the clouds of time as more tourists are coming to explore its unspoilt beauty and unique plant-life. An island paradise, even the name is said to derive from the Sanskrit dvipa sukhadhara meaning ‘island of bliss’. This gallery shows some of the amazing landscapes and people on this remote and beautiful island.
