Mastering Composition with Steve Davey
What will I learn on this course?
This workshop will cover all that you will need to know for mastering composition. This includes how to visually improve your shots, the visual conventions of composition and when you should obey them and when you should break them. We will also look at Steve's theory of mise en scene, and how to exploit composition to create and enhance meaning in your photographs. We will explore how to look for combinations of objects in the frame, how you can previsualise your image and then how lens choice, subject distance, viewpoint and angle can be combined to achieve the desired result.

Composition has a profound affect on your pictures. It will be the first thing that people see in your pictures, whether they realise it or not. Yet many photographers struggle with composition, and find it a barrier to taking good pictures.
Initially with an illustrated presentation, and then with extensive practical session, this course will look at the rules and conventions of composition, and of course when you should break and exploit them. We will also touch on some of the processes of composition including previsualising your pictures and lens choice.
Composition is about more than just making your pictures look good though. Exploiting composition, and the way that objects are combined in the frame can be used to set up meaning and create more visually complex pictures.
Steve will comprehensively explain his theory of 'Mise en Scene' literally 'putting in the scene' and will show you how to use it in your everyday photography to create better, more effective pictures.
The practical side of this course is held in the photogenic streets of Central London, including St Jame's Park and Covent Garden. Expect a fair bit of walking and some great images!
Cost of this course: £90
£85 if booked with another course
