East End Street Photography with Steve Davey
Website, Images and text © Steve Davey/stevedavey.com 1990-2017
The East End of London is an eclectic and fast-changing part of London. It is a place of traditional markets, contrasting with cafes where you can buy bowls of cereal at hipster prices! This is the territory of Banksy (and many imitators) with every wall seemingly covered in graffiti, of ancient streets and some cracking modern architecture. The markets are varied: we will visit the Colombia Road Flower Market and then move on to the iconic Brick Lane Market.
Colombia Road is a small market, but one of the best places in the capital to buy plants and flowers. A varied series of traders cram this narrow street turning it into a veritable jungle of colours and smells. There are great characters here, and the plants form a great backdrop to portraits.
Brick Lane is more sprawling and ramshackle: a traditional flea market on the streets of London. There are piles of junk here, and some real gems. A mix of people of all ages, races and cultures are either selling, buying or just browsing. It is a friendly market set against a backdrop of atmospheric streets, derelict buildings and a whole lot more graffiti!
These two markets, and the atmospheric streets of the area are a perfect location for street photography. We will be able to shoot both candid and travel-style portraits, as well as numerous atmospheric shots of some of the places that Steve considers the most photogenic in the local area.
Although the primary focus on this course is street photography, we will have the freedom to cover all sorts of other photographic themes, and techniques. We will look at composition, creating pictures and timing, as well as any issues and questions raised on the day.
At the end of the course, we will review some of the shots that you have achieved on the course. Rest assured though, Steve is always positive about pictures, giving full credit for what has been achieved, even whilst pointing out what might be done in the future for even better results.
In order to get the best of Colombia Road market, before it gets impossibly crowded, we are going to have to make an early start, but you will be more than rewarded for your effort with great pictures of this atmospheric part of the capital.
Cost of this course: £80
